Holiday programming 'Wirth Watching'

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - If you had been watching television over the holidays 50-years ago you would have seen lots of locally produced holiday shows.

Stations and especially this one as Utah’s first TV station had high schools parade their choirs in and out of the studio to fill up the viewing schedule.

Channel 4 put this choir on the roof of the station and they sang their hearts out

Long time television historian Tim Larson says it was logical to program like this in the early days of television

It was economical I would think and more than anything when you had 50 kids in a choir you had 5 relatives watch, it would double the ratings.

Of course one of the favorites was the song The 12 Days of Christmas because you could really act out the words.

Advertisers probably didn't stand in line to sponsor these shows and we really don't think the city waited for these shows, but they are part of our history.
