Winter storm to make driving challenging

OGDEN, Utah (ABC4 - Utah) A winter storm is heading for Northern Utah along with half a dozen high school football teams.

The state high school football championship games will be at Weber State Saturday. That will have hundreds of players and fans driving through the middle of the storm.

“You've got people coming from all over state [so] the option to move is not good,” said Bart Thompson, with the Utah High School Activities Association. “We're hoping to have a big crowd.”

After playing in 8 inches of snow last year, Thompson says the games will go on.

“I've never seen a game cancelled [but] I've seen start times pushed back,” said Thompson. “We've just got to deal with the weather as it comes.”

This storm is also presenting challenges for the Utah Department of Transportation.

“Usually for these storms we'll pre-treat the roads, but because of rain any sort of material or brine would've just washed away,” said Lee Nitchman, with UDOT. “We'll attack as it hits. All our drivers are rested and equipment is ready to go.”

The storm will be coming from the north, making travel on I-15 near Ogden difficult. The worst time to drive Saturday will be late morning to early afternoon.
