Reyes sworn in as Utah's new Attorney General

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - Sean Reyes took oath as Utah's newest Attorney General Monday at the Utah State Capitol.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah's new attorney general was sworn-in Monday at the state capitol.

Sean Reyes takes the oath with a lot on his plate from restoring the public's trust in the office to a major legal fight over gay marriage.

With his wife by his side and surrounded by family and friends in the rotunda, Reyes pledged o uphold the U.S. and state constitutions.

“I'm extremely humbled by the weight and responsibility of this office,” he said.

Reyes said it's important to restore the public's trust and confidence. This after his predecessor John Swallow resigned after allegations of bribery and extortion.

Gov. Gary Herbert told the audience Reyes is the right person to clean-up the office.

“I know that he is not only a strong defender of the law, but he is a man of impeccable integrity,” said Gov. Herbert.

The new AG takes office as the state is preparing to appeal a recent court ruling that found Utah's ban same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

“We're willing to do what it takes to protect laws and will of the people,” said Reyes.

Reyes told reporters after the ceremony he plans to hire outside counsel to oversee the state's appeal to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals and possibly to the Supreme Court.

"Supreme court practice is very unique and specialized expertise, so our commitment to the people is if we don't have it internally than we'll find what's best to represent the state," he said.

Although Reyes says he doesn't know the exact price tag of what it will cost taxpayers, Speaker of the House Becky Lockhart, R-Provo, tells ABC 4 Utah legislators are willing to shell out up to $2 million for a private legal team.

Reyes declined to say who he's tapped to represent the state in this legal fight saying that will be public only once the request for stay to the Supreme Court is filed which is expected to take place Monday or Tuesday.
