SPANISH FORK, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – One person was killed Friday night after driving his vehicle into the path of a semi coming down Spanish Fork Canyon.

The crash happened around 6:55 p.m. and closed State Route 6 at the mouth of the canyon.

The impact of the crash caused the semi truck, hauling trailers full of coal, to jackknife and caused the two trailers to overturn. Coal spilled all over the road.

The vehicles caught fire, but as 7:45 p.m. both the truck and car were smoldering.

The Utah Department o f Public Safety says the car that struck the semi was headed east toward the canyon and for a yet-unknown reason, drove directly into the path of the westbound semi. The driver, who appears to be the only occupant of the car, was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi was taken to a nearby hospital.
