Wintry weather causes costly crashes

Tuesday’s wintry weather reeked havoc on Utah road. Drivers ended up in ditches and dangerous crashes. UDOT and state troopers continue to work to clean up the mess. Utah Highway Patrol responded to 304 crashes as of 9 pm Tuesday in Salt Lake, Davis, and Utah counties.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah)- Tuesday’s wintry weather reeked havoc on Utah road. Drivers ended up in ditches and dangerous crashes. UDOT and state troopers continue to work to clean up the mess. Utah Highway Patrol responded to 304 crashes as of 9pm Tuesday in Salt Lake, Davis, and Utah counties.

Mother Nature unleashed a dose of snow covering the roads in the Wasatch Front and across the state. It proved too much for some drivers to handle.

“We were going 35 mph following a friend and then we saw a vehicle go into the median and then other vehicles rear end that vehicle and kind of started to pile up,” said passenger Spencer Zerull.

It was a five car pile up that soon turned into six cars.

“Since we're pulling a trailer we hit the brakes but we just weren't able to stop in time so we also ran into the vehicles in front of us and started to pile up,” said Zerull.

If you weren’t involved in a crash, you probably saw plenty.

“A lot of accidents like, I saw a lot. I saw more than 15 times accidents today in the 201 highway,” said Sangwok Chu.

Emergency response crews took to social media to warn drivers to take it easy and avoid the roads if possible. UDOT tweeted this saying, “Delays along Wasatch Front due to winter weather. Watch for plows and troopers responding to crashes. Ritchfield City Police posted this warning on its Facebook Page, “If you can, stay home. The roads are very bad and I-70 is currently closed from mile post 23 south.

“Driving defensively and driving the right speed for the conditions is really important,” said driver Laura Briefer.

For Laura Briefer, despite the slow commute and costly crashes, she’s ready for winter.

“It’s beautiful it’s magical and it also replenishes our water supply,” said Briefer.
