Jon Huntsman Sr. denies claim he was the source for 2012 Romney tax allegation

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) - A new book released Friday claims Jon Huntsman Sr. was behind the accusation Mitt Romney didn't pay his taxes, that became a focus during the 2012 presidential election. But Huntsman is fighting back and calling the writers tabloid trash.

ABC 4 Utah talked to Huntsman Friday at the Grand America Hotel and asked him about this claim. Not only does Huntsman deny he did it, he said the authors of the book never contacted him.

The new book is making some big claims about 2012 presidential election between President Obama and Mitt Romney, and one them one singles out Jon Huntsman Sr.

"I'm always amazed at the trashy untrue journalism that someone concocts," said Jon Huntsman Sr., Huntsman Cancer Institute.

The book "Double Down" written by journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann said last year during the presidential election Jon Huntsman Sr. was the source behind Senator Harry Reid’s argument that Romney hadn't paid his taxes for 10 years.

"This whole situation would end very quickly if he would just release his income tax returns," said Sen. Harry Reid, (D) Nevada.

That put Romney on the defensive during the campaign.

"I did go back and look at my taxes and over the past 10 years I never paid less than 13 percent Harry Reid's charge is totally false and I'm waiting for Harry Reid to put up who it was that told him," said Mitt Romney, former presidential candidate.

Although the book claims that it was Huntsman, the Utah businessman said that's just not true.

"I've never known anything about Mitt Romney's tax returns. I don't care anything about them. I would have no interest in them. I've never talked to Senator Reid about Mitt Romney's taxes."

Friday night the Huntsmans are celebrating the announcement of a new cancer research center. The news of this claim just happened to break on the same day. ABC 4 Utah will have full coverage on the new cancer center Saturday night at 10 o'clock.
