Ice storm creates traffic nightmare on Utah's roadways

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Overnight ice and an early morning snow meant many of Utah’s roadways were a mess Thursday morning.

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Overnight ice and an early morning snow meant many of Utah’s roadways were a mess Thursday morning.

UDOT tells ABC 4 News that in Salt Lake County alone, where the storm hit the hardest, there were about 163 property damage accidents, 18 where someone was injured and about 45 slide-offs.

Officials with the Utah Department of Transportation tell ABC 4 Utah they did the best they could to get ahead of this storm; sending out crews Wednesday night to pre-treat the roads and then crews out to plow once the snow started falling around 8 a.m.

UDOT Traveler Information Manager Lisa Miller said, “We saw some crashes and slide-offs this morning, but thankfully the p.m. commute is going to be a little bit easier. We’re still thinking there’s going to be some road slush, but not nearly as heavy an impact as the morning commute.”

Black ice could be a problem on those untreated streets. UDOT is also asking drivers to be careful in those areas that can easily ice over like in the canyons, on bridges or overpasses.
