Valentine's surprise for Utah National Guard family

MURRAY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) Valentine’s Day is a time families are celebrating their love for each other, but for many Utah families, part of their heart is serving overseas.

The Kesler family is one of those families.

Staff Sargent Fredrick Zach Kesler is on his second deployment with the Utah National Guard. Kesler is a few months into a year-long deployment.

While they are able to speak often, his wife Nichole, and two kids, Kylie and Carter are never guaranteed the opportunity to hear his voice each day.

The three went to Build-A-Bear to make sure dad could always hear them say they love him, no matter the circumstances.

But mom and dad had a surprise of their own for Kylie and Carter.

Two months ago, Nichole sent Zach two voice boxes, so he could record them a message.

After a quick distraction, Kylie and Carter’s bears (well, Carter made a puppy) held the voice of the man they’re missing most.

“I was about to cry just letting them hear that message,” said Nichole.

“It says princess Kylie, cause I'm a princess,” said Kylie. “I felt the paw and I felt something like plastic and I pressed the button and I'm like ‘oh my gosh!’”

Now it is their turn to surprise dad. His monkey (dressed as Yoda) will make his way to Afghanistan, with the sounds of home.
