SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) – More than 400 immigrants made their dreams of being a U.S. citizen come true today. A naturalization ceremony was held Monday morning in Salt Lake City.

It's the moment many have been waiting their whole lives for.

"I have been waiting for this moment for 16 years and I’ve always felt this nation was part of my roots and my growth in becoming a person so it felt like an amazing moment,” explained Bryan Nava.

Nava was educated in the United States and says on top of the honor of now being a U.S. citizen he says he realizes the responsibility he has to the country that helped raise him.

“I owe a lot to this country and I’ve always been willing to give back and that's why I feel proud and I can call myself now an American,” said Nava.

For Ahmed Ahmad it's the start of a new life.

"I don't know what to say,” said Ahmad. “The words are like out of me, but I just want to say thank you."

The country that once gave him and his father protection is now home to his new family.

"We don't have any freedom over there so we find our freedom, our liberty here,” said Ahmad. "Because of the U.S. they have a safe life right now."

The same is true for so many of the refugees looking to the United States for safety and for opportunity.

"I come from Somalia. I lived in Kenya for 18 years as a refugee,” said Halima Sala.

Halima came to the United States in 2007, but today taking the oath and raising the American flag means she and her family can finally know peace. She joins the 454 other immigrants, from 83 different countries, who now call the United States home.

"I'm happy,” said Sala. “Thank you God, thank you United States."
