Utah’s top three quarterbacks—returning sophomore starter Travis Wilson, true freshman Brandon Cox and redshirt sophomore Adam Schulz—combined for 387 passing yards. Redshirt sophomore running back James Poole ran for 68 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries.
The defense made its share of plays as well by getting four picks, including an 83-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior Tryon Morris-Edwards, and four pass breakups by senior Keith McGill.
“Good stuff. A lot of positives in the scrimmage,” said ninth-year head coach Kyle Whittingham. “Still some work to do, as there always is, but we did a lot better job offensively of not shooting ourselves in the foot. We finished drives and had very few self-inflicted wounds. It was a clean scrimmage with very few penalties. The defense was a little soft at times, but probably half of our starting defense isn’t out there right now; so I’m not concerned about it. We did make some plays in the secondary by our veterans. The tempo of the offense was good.”
After the offense was shut out on its first three drives—including back-to-back three-and-outs to start the scrimmage—Schulz got the offense clicking. Working against the first team defense, Schulz threw for a pair of touchdowns on his first two series by completing 7-of-8 passes for 119 yards.
On the afternoon, Schulz completed 13-of-22 passes for 175 yards with two picks. Wilson recovered from a slow start to complete 11-of-25 throws for 146 yards and a touchdown with one interception. He also had a 25 yard touchdown pass to Dres Anderson called back due to a holding penalty.
Cox, a Pasadena, Calif., native who enrolled in classes early at the U. to be a part of spring drills, completed 7-of-10 passes for 66 yards. He also showed off his running ability, picking up 50 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Lucky Radley had a busy afternoon with 10 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown, and four catches for 41 yards and a score.
Anderson led the receiving corps with six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Kenneth Scott had four catches for 60 yards.
Utah is breaking in two new place kickers this spring. Sophomore Andy Phillips made 3-of-5 field goals, including two 30-yard efforts. Redshirt freshman Jamie Sutcliffe went 3-for-5 with a long of 47 yards.
