He talked after Saturday's 3rd round about staying poised and playing his game and continuing to hit his driver well. All the stuff one is expected to say holding onto the lead heading into the final round. But unless you've been there before, it's hard to make it happen. And he couldn't do it, shooting a final round 2 over par 73 to fall back into a tie for 5th place. A decent finish, but about 4 places lower than he wanted.
Almost every golfer goes through those growing pains. Tom Watson blew a bunch of leads before he figured out how to win. Johnny Miller took a while to break through. So did nearly everyone out there. It seems to be a painful yet necessary step toward the winner's circle. Hopefully Summerhays will get there. Hopefully he can look at the things he did well for 3 days and figure out how play like that on the 4th day the next time he's in that position.
Here's hoping that that day comes sooner rather than later.
