Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays will be without first baseman/designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion and reliever Brett Cecil for the remainder of the season after both 2013 All-Stars were placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.
Encarnacion is scheduled to undergo surgery later in the week to repair cartilage damage in his left wrist. The slugger missed four games earlier this month before briefly returning to the lineup for this past weekend's series against Baltimore, but went 1-for-12 over the three games.
The 30-year-old still ranks third in the American League in both home runs (36) and RBI (104) and batted .272 in 142 contests.
Cecil has been bothered by elbow discomfort that has limited him to just three appearances in September. The converted starter put together a strong season prior to the injury, posting a 5-1 record with a 2.82 ERA over 60 outings and striking out 70 batters through 60 2/3 innings.
