DRAPER, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Was it murder or self-defense? That’s what Draper police are trying to figure out after a shooting Friday night at 498 east 13800 south. Police say 56-year old Rick O'Meara was shot and killed by his estranged wife's boyfriend James Kit Gikiu. Gikiu has been arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail pending charges.

19-year old Ryan O’Meara says Kit had been dating his mother Shelley for a few months. He claims that his mother was still married to Ryan’s father. However, he says the divorce papers were never signed. Fortunately, Ryan wasn't home when the shooting happened. Ryan O’Meara says, “It's devastating that this would happen, especially in my house where I live and have to think about and walk outside and see where my dad was shot and killed.”

Ryan says he found out that Kit and his mother were sitting on a couch just feet away from the back door when his father tried to get into the house. He says his father was unarmed and Kit shot his dad once in the stomach with a shotgun. Ryan O’Meara says,” I think he should go to jail for a very long time. Not just cause it's my dad, but don't take's someone's life especially if they are unarmed.”

Ryan says his father beat up Kit during the Christmas holidays and that the shooting was about payback. Draper police says they'll decide Monday whether to file charges against Gikiu. Police say Rick O’Meara was no stranger to them. They say among other arrests, there is a domestic violence history between O’Meara and his wife.
