Court papers filed in Salt Lake City's U.S. District Court on Jan. 13 say 25-year-old Lindsey Goggin died in August, five days after being arrested and booked into jail.
The documents say Goggin told jail nurses she could not stop vomiting and that her heart was beating rapidly.
Staff tried to resuscitate her, but failed to immediately call an ambulance, court papers say.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified financial damages. Defendants include the county, jail commander, sheriff and medical staffers.
A message left for jail spokeswoman Lt. Pam Lofgreen was not immediately returned on Wednesday.
