Two Utah County officers shot, 1 dead

UTAH COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Two Utah County Sheriff’s officers were shot Thursday afternoon in an incident that began in Eagle Mountain.

Sheriff Tracy with Utah County Sheriff’s Office says around 1 p.m. Sgt. Cory Wride was ambushed, shot and killed when attempting to help an abandoned or disabled vehicle on Highway 73. 

Sgt. Wride is a 19-year veteran and leaves behind a wife and five children.

A second deputy, Greg Sherwood, 38, engaged in high-speed chase with the suspect in Santaquin. The Sherwood was shot in the head. He was transported to Utah Valley Regional Hospital for surgery. 

Sherwood is in critical condition at this time. 

Police say the suspect took off again on I-15 toward Nephi. The suspect encountered several people in that area in an attempt to allegedly high-jack a vehicle.

Police say the suspect was critically wounded in an incident with Juab County officers and has been taken into custody. 

The investigation is ongoing and police are not releasing anymore information at this time. 

Utah Highway Patrol dispatch is asking for anyone who was approached by the suspect or has information to call (801) 887-3800.
