Blood pools and bloody footprint shows the victim's path. It appears to have started at an apartment near 1100 East and 1700 South, down the back alleyway and all the way down the city block.
Even before the sun was up one man happened to have his lights on.
Roger Croft told ABC 4 Utah, "I never get up that early. This is an amazing coincidence."
Just after 5 a.m. he hears a knock at his window.
“I turned around and there was this young woman there,” explained Croft. “You could see that she had blood on her t-shirt. She said my friend has been stabbed and we need help."
Croft walked outside to find the victim, a white male in his early 20's, covered in blood lying in the gutter.
"He rolled over; his back was completely bloody you know it was serious,” said Croft.
At first the girl didn't want Roger to call 9-1-1.
Croft said, "She said, ‘oh please just take us home.’ And I said ‘You don't want an ambulance?’ ‘Oh please just take us home.’”
9-1-1 was eventually called and apparently just in time. The man could no longer stand and his wounds appeared fatal. Croft says the woman told him her friend had been jumped by two men and had been stabbed four or five times.
"One thing that was obvious was that the wounds were all on his back, and so it would appear rather than being a fight that seemed to fit with what she had talked about."
The man was taken to a local hospital and is now in serious condition.
Now that Croft has had some time to reflect he realizes how lucky it was that was up well before his alarm clock.
Croft said, "It was only a coincidence of the light being on in the basement otherwise you don't know what could have happened."
Police aren’t releasing much information at this time. The investigation continues. Police have not made any arrests.
