Police say around 1:30 a.m. 22-year-old Ashlee Zimmer was sitting out on the curb having a cigarette behind her car when 26-year-old Ramiro Serrano Hernandez came around the corner. Police say he had been drinking and lost control of the Jeep Cherokee he was driving. He reportedly hit Ashlee's car first, then struck her, and dragged her body underneath the SUV before driving through a fence and hitting a building.
Neighbor Toni Dickson told ABC 4 Utah, "I can't imagine. I mean I don't even think she knew what hit her; because she was on the other side of the car so he couldn't have seen her."
Zimmer's husband also heard the accident. He was the one who called police.
Orem Police Department Lt. Craig Martinez said, "He heard the crash came out to see what was happening and saw his wife underneath the suspect's truck."
Zimmer was still under the truck when paramedics arrived. Hernandez had run off.
The 22-year-old was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead around 2 am.
An hour after that, Hernandez, the man allegedly responsible for the accident was found hiding behind a dumpster.
"This is a horrible situation for everyone involved especially the family," said Martinez. "Lot of lives were changed because someone decided to get behind the wheel while they had been drinking."
Zimmer and her husband had just been married four months.
Hernandez was arrested and booked into jail on charges of DUI, automobile homicide and leaving the scene of an injury accident. Police say earlier in the day he was cited by Lindon police for being drunk and disorderly after a wedding.
