Police in California were searching for Steven Litwin, who allegedly kidnapped his two girls on Sunday. Police believed Litwin was headed to Connecticut.
ABC 4 News spoke to the Beaver County Sheriff on Monday, who said that Litwin turned himself in and that the girls are both safe.
Beaver County Sheriff Cameron Noel said the suspect claims he had permission to take his daughters to visit their grandfather in Connecticut, but that he he turned himself in as soon as he became aware of the Amber Alert.
Sheriff Noel told ABC 4 he thinks the suspect may be innocent and that the girls' mother might be inventing the story.
Noel said he is waiting for verification from California officials before deciding what to do with Litwin and the girls.
The Amber Alert out of California claims that Litwin had reportedly made threats against the girls.
