The National Weather Service reports the balmy 81 degree weather Tuesday passed the previous record of 78 degrees set in 1916.
The record comes amid an unusually warm spring for North America. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist Jake Crouch says at least 7,775 weather stations across the nation broke daily high temperature records in March, and another 7,517 broke records for night-time heat.
Crouch says that's more high temperature records broken in one month than ever before.
KSL reports Salt Lake City had daily record warm low temperatures on seven days in March. It also hit a record high of 80 degrees last month, surpassing the old record of 78 degrees set in 2004.
