The incident happened at 800 South and 900 West in the parking lot of a Little Caesars.
Police said a woman left her car running to purchase a pizza and left two girls, ages 2 and 3, in the backseat. The woman was not the girls’ mother, but a relative.
Jeremy Ohm, 24, is accused of getting behind the wheel of the car while the woman was inside Little Caesars. Ohm allegedly crashed into another car as he drove away. He was pulled over and arrested near 200 South and 400 West.
A witness who wished to remain anonymous said she watched police take the girls out of the car.
“They were crying,” the woman said. “They were two little girls probably scared out of their minds wanting their mother.”
Police say the girls were uninjured when they were found.
“I can’t think of anything more precious than a child,” Detective Mike Hamideh with the Salt Lake City Police Department said. “We have to take every precaution when it comes to children.”
Hamideh said it is never advisable to leave children in a car for any amount of time.
