Widow of fallen Ogden officer holds 2nd annual tribute race

OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - Widow of fallen Ogden police officer Jared Francom is holding the 2nd annual Cops and Robbers Challenge on Saturday. She told ABC 4 Utah the race is just as much about honoring her husband as it about helping others.

For many people in Utah, images of a gun shootout are what they remember of fallen Ogden police officer Jared Francom. He was killed in the line of duty last January and left behind a wife and children.

"It's hard, some days are easier than others," said Erin Francom, Officer Jared Francom's widow.

Francom tells ABC 4 Utah's Brian Carlson that's why she's putting in so much effort planning the 2nd annual Cops and Robbers Challenge in his honor. It's a fun obstacle course race, that pays tribute to her husband, raises money for other officers, and helps Francom heal.

"It makes me feel good to be able to do this, it makes me feel happy that people come together through such a tragic event and it's nice to make something positive out of it," said Francom. "That's what Jared liked to do, he wanted to have fun, and he wouldn't want it to be a sad memorial."

"Here's the point. You sign up for the race, see what's on the course, then you crawl, run, climb and swing to raise money for future officers in need," said ABC 4 Utah's Brian Carlson.

Francom said proceeds from the race will set up a scholarship to help an officer pay for the academy.

"People, individuals have to pay for it themselves and that's quite a chunk of change. I think it helps out a lot of people if we can do that for somebody," said Francom.

For Jared Francom's fellow officers the race keeps his memory alive.

"This is one of those things to, in a sense, dedicate to him, in what he did and what he stood for as a person," said Nicholas Poorte, Ogden Police Dept.

For his widow it's a positive tradition, she believe's Francom would be glad to be a part of.

"I think he'd be proud of this," said Francom.

The Cops and Robbers Challenge begins 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Pioneer Stadium just off of 17th Street in Ogden. The cost is $30 to participate. Francom is hoping to raise enough money to send at least one officer through the academy. ABC 4 Utah is told that cost is roughly between $7,000 -$10,000. If you want to help, they'll need it.
