West Valley City police sued

WEST VALLEY Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - The police department's narcotics squad is being sued by a couple who claims they were illegally searched and arrested.
WEST VALLEY Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Another lawsuit has been filed against the controversial narcotics squad at the West Valley police department.
Dante Ketchens and his wife Danielle Swasey filed the civil suit in U.S. Federal Court.
They claim their civil rights were violated when members of the narcotics squad came to their home one year ago.

Among those named in the suit are Shaun Cowley and Kevin Salmon. Both are currently on administrative leave for their involvement in the Danielle Willard shooting death.

Last August, Ketchens was arrested by the narcotics squad during a raid at his home. He spent nearly five months in jail after being charged for drug dealing. But federal prosecutors dismissed the case after the district attorney dropped more than 100 cases filed by the narcotics squad claiming the evidence was tainted.

In the lawsuit, attorneys for the couple claim they were handcuffed for 8 hours not allowing Swasey to "change her daughter's diaper" and forcing her to "feed the baby wearing handcuffs"

Meanwhile police "ate pizza and played video games while mocking Swasey and the children," the lawsuit claims.

Ketchens was at his home Friday. He says his attorney is preventing him from talking about the case. But he did say he and his wife were humiliated and ridiculed in front of their children.

He has a ten year old son. And according to the lawsuit the boy heard an officer say “his father would get out of prison around the same time that D.K. (his son) would be going to prison.”

“That was the hardest thing for my son to hear,” says Ketchens.

ketchens owned a barber shop in Salt Lake City but he says he lost it after spending nearly five months in jail.

Also named in the lawsuit are Sean McCarthy, John Coyle and police Chief Thayle “Buzz” Nielsen.

No one was available for comment at the police department Friday.
