Utah County gets extra help from UHP in search for missing fisherman

LINDON, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Utah County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue get some help from the Utah Highway Patrol in searching Utah Lake for a missing fisherman.

37-year-old Tam Huynh went missing Saturday. His boat was found around 5 p.m. still running with the throttle half open. Search teams are confident his body is somewhere in the water.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Department has been using dive teams and sonar equipment to search the murky waters. They began dragging the lake Monday, but because of bad weather cut their search short.

Tuesday it was an entirely different story, with clear skies and calm water, which made it much easier to use the sonar equipment. Although they initially planned to scale down their search Tuesday, the nice conditions encouraged them to call in some help. Utah Highway Patrol brought in its boat with its advanced equipment.

Utah County’s sonar equipment can scan about 30 feet, UHP’s sonar can scan about double that.

Sgt. Eldon Packer said, “They also have a system that they can drop down in and send out a constant pulse into the water. They can literally guide their diver in to any object while the divers are in the water.”

Despite teams combing over the 3-mile-wide by 1-mile-long stretch of lake, there’s still no sign of Huynh.
