SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Utah Catholics feel overjoyed a new pope has been elected.

Many Utah Catholics say it’s significant to have a pope from Argentina because there has never been a pope from either North or South America.

Trevor Woods watched the Pope make his first world wide debut on live television with friends at the Newman Catholic Center in Salt Lake City.

“It's completely new to me and completely exciting,” said James Dotterweich.

“I think it's wonderful. I think we have a universal Church and I think it's important different parts of the world are represented,” said Kathy Scott.

This Catholic Church is making a statement to the world that even with its long and storied history— it’s willing to do something new.

“I'm so filled with hope and excitement and this is a very exciting day for Catholics,” said Scott.
