It appears Utah Attorney General John Swallow, who's currently being investigated for corruption, bribery and other wrong doings, may have one less thing to worry about.
"It is very likely that next week the Dept. of Justice is going to be sending a letter of clearance to our Attorney General John Swallow, meaning that he will not be prosecuted by the FBI or the DOJ," said Eric Ethington, Utah Political Capitol.
Eric Ethington, Managing Editor of utahpoliticalcapitol.com said the federal government has been looking into Swallow since 2012. But now won't pursue federal criminal charges. Although it's good news for Swallow, it's not exactly clear how good.
"Could it mean that he was found innocent by the investigation? Absolutely, it could mean that. It could also mean that they didn't have enough evidence to prosecute. It could also mean they've made a deal and they're going after someone else; it means we won't ever really know," said Ethington.
The other big question is - What does this mean for the four other the investigations just beginning, including the one conducted by Utah House republicans? Ethington believes they will move on as scheduled.
One of the reasons Ethington believes this won't stop the other investigations is because Swallow is being investigated on both the state and federal level. Just because the feds don’t want to press charges, that doesn't mean the state or others won't.
