Steed took the witness stand in court Tuesday as questions about her credibility continue to dog her.
Trooper Steed raised her hand in court and promised to tell the truth.
And according to this former Trooper of the Year, the truth is she violated the UHP's own rules twice in one DUI stop.
Steed testified that during a 2010 DUI stop, she deliberately left her microphone in her car.
She did this, Steed said, so a supervisor would not know she violated UHP policy by performing a breath-a-lyzer test before a field sobriety check.
Joseph Jardine is a defense attorney representing one the people Steed arrested for an alleged DUI offense.
Jardine cross-examined Steed on the stand Tuesday.
After court, ABC 4 had the following conversation with the attorney:
ABC 4: “Correct me if I am wrong, she testified she took her mic off so that her supervisors wouldn't see that she wasn't following UHP procedure?”
Jardine: “That's exactly what she said."
Steed was reprimanded for this action two years ago, the second of two reprimands that year.
And late last year, the state paid a $40,000 dollar settlement to a man Steed tasered while he was still in his car.
So, ABC 4 tried to ask the Trooper if these incidents still warranted her being held in good stead.
But Steed refused to answer our questions as she left court Tuesday.
We asked her,
"Do you think your credibility and honesty are being called into question."
Steed did not reply.
As ABC 4 first reported, Salt Lake's District Attorney has been reviewing dozens of Steed's cases, some of which have since been dismissed.
According to Jardine, the key question in all of this is whether Steed is telling the truth.
But late Tuesday afternoon, Jardine told ABC 4,
"Based on what was discussed in the courtroom, I find her testimony unbelievable."
Because the defense continues to have questions about Steed's credibility, another hearing has now been scheduled for next month.
At that time, her UHP supervisors are expected to testify about her actions and comments.
