During the morning of June 5, 2002, Brian David Mitchell cut through the screen of the Smart residence kitchen window, went upstairs and kidnapped the then 14 year-old at gunpoint.
Smart was found on March 12, 2003 when police were tipped off by the public, who recognized Smart through the veil and wig she was wearing while walking down a street in Sandy. She was with Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee.
Today, Smart is happily married to Matthew Gilmour, a Scotsman whom she met while they were both completing their LDS missions in Paris.
Smart's captors are locked away. Wanda Barzee is serving her sentence in prison in Texas, while Brian David Mitchell is serving his life sentence in prison in Tucson, Arizona.
Smart speaks to the public all over the country through her Elizabeth Smart Foundation and has become a correspondent for ABC News.
After the case of Elizabeth Smart, law enforcement agencies all over the nation have changed the way they handle cases of missing and abducted children. The first time Utah used the Amber Alert was in Smart's case.
