Police Chief Ken Eborn says the 23-year-old officer was trying to make a traffic stop about 5 p.m. Thursday when he abandoned the idea and made a U-turn. That's when police say a person on the side of the road opened fire.
Eborn says the driver's side of the vehicle was hit by eight bullets, including one that passed over the officer's lap and lodged into his computer.
Police say they found 22-year-old suspect Zane Openshaw at a shed near some apartments.
Eborn says there doesn't appear to be any connection between the officer and the shooter.
He says the officer may have glass shards in his arm, but is otherwise OK.
