John Paul White was sentenced Monday to 15 years to life in prison in the November 2010 death of 62-year-old Mary White. He'd pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in May.
Police said John White snapped after the coffee request, and tried to strangle his mother with an iPod cord. Police say he later stabbed her and slashed her throat.
Authorities say John White cleaned up the blood and tried to commit suicide with a mix of carpet cleaner and his mother's medications.
John White's defense attorney said his client was under the influence of synthetic marijuana, or "spice," at the time.
