SPANISH FORK, Utah (ABC 4 News) - An off-duty Sandy police officer died after he suffered head injuries from a motorcycle accident in Utah County.

Police said 28-year-old Remington Barron of the Sandy City Police Department was traveling south on I-15 near mile marker 259 around 1:55 am.

The left and right lanes of the highway were closed for construction.

Police said a pick-up truck driven by 38-year-old Chad Whittington from Lehi moved from the left closed lane to the right closed lane while working on the construction project.

Initial reports from the scene state that, as Whittington was crossing the lanes, the motorcycle driven by Barron struck the pickup truck.

“The driver claims he didn't see the motorcycle,” says Trooper Todd Johnson.

The driver of the pickup truck is part of the construction crew working on Interstate-15. Authorities have yet to place blame on anyone.

But they say as Barron was southbound the pickup truck left the construction zone into Barron's lane.

“There's no indication of impairment,” says Trooper Johnson.

Meanwhile at the Sandy police department, officers covered badges in the traditional black ribbon.
“I know that doing police work was what he loved,” says Sgt. Jon Arnold. “He was very enthusiastic and energetic. And that's something that will be missed."

Sgt. Arnold says Barron was a fairly new officer having been on the force for two years. He says Barron had just finished his patrol duties and was heading home to Spanish Fork. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

"It's just a sad day," Sgt. Arnold says.

Barron was transported to a Provo hospital by helicopter but passed away from his injuries around 8:00 am Friday.

Police report that Barron was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and the investigation into the accident continues.
