Rockport evacuees return home

Residents in Rockport returned home Monday morning after a fire that started a week ago.

SUMMIT COUNTY, UTAH (ABC 4 UTAH) - Residents in Rockport returned home Monday morning. Last week lightening struck causing the fire to quickly spread throughout the neighborhood of Rockport.

ABC 4 Utah spoke to residents and saw some of the damage left behind by the blaze that destroyed nearly 2,000 Acres.

Rita and her husband Richard Sandoval are among the lucky ones. They were evacuated last week because of the Rockport fire and Monday morning they returned home for the first time. "We're very blessed our home is not burnt. Our home, thanks to the TV station, we could see the ledge of our home so we knew our home wasn't on fire. But there is smoke on every single side of our home," says the Sandoval's.

Wendy Gray and her husband are also fortunate to return to a home still standing. However, they tell ABC 4 Utah  they are left with mixed feelings out of concern for their neighbors. "This morning I had anxiety about coming home because you feel blessed but you also feel other peoples loss," says Gray.

Firefighters say over 1,900 burned and eight homes were destroyed by the blaze. Also lost, over a dozen other structures like sheds, pull behind campers, and fifth wheel campers. "I'm really glad we didn't loose any lives in this or didn't have any injuries or any major incidents with firefighters as well. They've all stayed safe," says Bryce Boyer the Summit County Fire Warden.

Although not all the homes could be saved from the flames, hundreds of them were. Now, moving forward, many residents say they feel profound gratitude to all the firefighters. "We've talked to them and we say thank you and they say that's what we do and we say it's our home so all you do has meant everything to us," says Gray.

Information packets were given to every resident in Rockport full of information on returning home and what steps they can take next. For more information visit http://www.summitwildfires.com
