Race for Africa

Utahns raced Saturday morning for the children of Africa.

PROVO, Utah County (ABC 4 Utah) - Utahns raced Saturday morning for the children of Africa.

The Adventure Race for Africa held at the Utah Lake State Park in Provo is styled after triathlons, only the distances are shorter and canoeing is substituted for swimming.

Brian Moore came from Layton with his family to contribute to the cause also well as take part in an easy workout.  “I just did a triathlon and I can’t swim so they thought this was a safe one,” said Moore.  ‘I’ll still be alive (after canoeing) so they probably like the thought of that.”

The race began at 7:30 in the morning.  Canoes were paddled up the Provo River, while cyclists and runners hit the roads and trails around the state park.

Several families entered as teams in the race, which is a fundraiser for the World of Difference Foundation.  100% of the money raised goes to build schools in Africa.

Currently, the foundation is building an extension to a grade school in one of the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.  It is also delivering textbooks and other classroom supplies to the school.

Besides school supplies and building materials bought with donations from Utah, volunteers are helping in the construction.  Dr. Richard Nielsen, one of the founders of World of Difference and an expedition leader, said it changes the lives of not only the children, but also the volunteers.  “When you come back to Utah you can’t just pick up where you left off.  It changes you in very real ways,” said Dr. Nielsen.

The foundation has already finished 10 school projects on the African continent.

In August, ABC 4 Utah’s Brent Hunsaker will go along on an expedition sponsored by the foundation.  Hunsaker will bring back special reports on the projects of the foundation and the Utahns who are making a difference in the lives of Kenya’s children.
