Possible conflict of interest with head of legislative committee investigating Swallow

SALT LAKE CITY, (ABC 4 Utah) – Questions about a possible conflict of interest surround a Utah legislator tasked with heading the special House committee that will investigate the attorney general.

Representative Lowry Snow, (R) of St. George, is being called into question because of his ties to St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson. Snow is leading the 9-member committee that is set to start investigating Attorney General John Swallow.

Johnson is the main man accusing Swallow of wrongdoing.

In a telephone interview with ABC 4 Utah, Snow said it is too early to know if his link to Johnson will pose a problem.

“The issue of conflict of interest will have to be determined as the committee decides who it is that will called upon as a witness,” Snow said.

According to Snow, he and Johnson have legal ties. His law firm represented Johnson in the past. Snow is currently representing others in a complaint against Johnson.

Snow said if Johnson is called to testify in the legislative investigation he is prepared to step down.

“It will be dealt with fairly in a way that if I have to recuse myself or I would assume if any other member of the committee ha to rescue themselves for a conflict, that’s the way it will be dealt with,” he said.

Snow’s biggest concern is getting to the bottom of the facts surrounding Swallow. He said he is invested and committed to the ethic panel, despite talk of whether he should stay or go.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to invest my time and to make certain, at least as far as my part goes, that we do everything we can to get it right,” Snow added.

ABC 4 Utah reached out to the Speaker of the House for comment on the possible conflict of interest, but our calls were not immediately returned.
