SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4 News) - Neighbors who live near a man accused of kidnapping and raping a woman are shocked by the allegations.

Lonnie Norton is in Salt Lake County Jail facing numerous charges.

Sandy police say Norton is accused of kidnapping a woman early Sunday. Police say he allegedly duct taped the woman's mouth and threatened her with a gun before sexually assaulting her inside a building on the University of Utah campus.

Norton is a director of College Computing in the School of Humanities. University officials would not comment on Norton's charges, but released a statement saying, "The University of Utah has no tolerance for use of its facilities in violation of University policy or law. University employees who commit violent acts on University property are not eligible to remain employed at the University and will be excluded from campus."

Some of Norton's neighbors in South Salt Lake say they knew of his troubles. They also say Norton acted odd at times, but was a good father.

"I'm shocked to say the least," an anonymous neighbor said. "He always seemed like a timid guy."

Neighbors also say the allegations have turned into a sad situation for the family.

"I think something like this is pretty devastating to hear for a family to go through that," the neighbor added.
