WEST VALLY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Today marks a somber anniversary; one year ago today two young boys were murdered by their father. Braden and Charlie Powell had just arrived at their father's house for a supervised visit, instead their dad, Josh, took a hatchet to the boys and then set his house on fire burning it to the ground and killing all three.

You see these faces and it’s hard to believe anyone could want to hurt them, let alone their own father.

The boy's grandparents, Chuck and Judy Cox, have been working tirelessly since the boys murder to ensure nothing like this could ever happen again. They recently introduced a bill called Charlie and Braden's Law.

Susan Powell’s close fried Kiirsi Hellewell told ABC 4 News, "We've been hoping for a long time that there will be some kind of law at least in Utah and Washington, across the country, that would protect children where if one of their parents is missing and the other one is suspect in a police investigation that they would have to prove their innocence before they get to be able to be with their children."

While family and friends fight to keep other children safe they're still not giving up hope that the case into Susan Powell’s disappearance will be solved.

"We're still trying to find Susan,” said Hellewell. “She's still missing. We're still hoping and praying that the police will be able to solve this case."

Despite West Valley City's unwillingness to share information about their investigation Susan’s friend believes they're not going to let her disappearance turn into a cold case.

Hellewell said, "They're still as tight lipped as ever, but every time I ask them are they giving up they said no absolutely not. They're working very hard and to me that means since Josh is dead they must have other suspects they're pursuing."

That could be Josh's own father, Steven Powell, who's currently behind bars in Washington State.

"I think he knows what happened to Susan and may have helped with it and that he needs to be punished if he had any part in it,” said Hellewell.

While Susan’s friends and family wait for someone to be punished for taking the mother and her boys away, there's one thing that brings them comfort.

Hellewell said, "They are with Susan now and that they're together and they're happy and she finally has her boys back."

A candlelight vigil is being held tonight in the Charlie and Braden’s memory at West View Park in West Valley City at 7 o’clock.
