Ogden boy wows at Sundance

PARK CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Sundance 2013 is still going strong up in Park City this week, but there's more to this festival than the films. So I grabbed my Handicam and hit the streets to show you some of the best entertainment.
Sundance 2013 is still going strong up in Park City this week, but there's more to this festival than the films. So I grabbed my Handicam and hit the streets to show you some of the best entertainment.

Believe it or not, I didn't find it inside the theatres; I found it right along the street. His name was Sammy Thornbrue.

"It’s hard to say Thornbrue so we just did Sammy Brue," Sammy said.

I was actually walking down the other side of the street when his voice caught my attention. As I got closer, I realized I wasn't the only one entranced by this soulful 11 year-old.

"He’s a big fan of Justin Townes Earle if you notice the style, even the signature on the guitar," said his dad, Mike Thornbrue.

Sammy and his family are from Ogden. Mike said Sammy’s obsession with music started a little over a year ago.

"I bought him a guitar Christmas of 2011 and he took off with it. I showed him about 3 chords and about 4 months later he passed my ability," Mike said.

This week, he’s been wooing crowds in park city. But like many other rock stars, Sammy has already had his ups and downs. He admits an addiction almost put an end to his budding career.

"I actually got hooked on video games for awhile but I quit, I quit, I quit all that," Sammy said with a smile.

Okay, so maybe it’s more of a pointless hobby rather than an addiction, but I can't get rolling stone interested with just a play station obsession! Rock star gossip aside, Sammy’s dad says the best part for him is to see his son come out of his shell.

"For a kid who won't talk to anybody if they approach him 1 on 1, its fun to kind of just see him get out," Mike said.

What's fun for Sammy, other than the cash he’s getting from strangers, is seeing people smile.

"Just to inspire people, that's the best part," Sammy said.

So what does Sammy plan to do with all the money he made? He said he wants to get some new guitar equipment, and buy something nice for his little sisters.
