Authorities say the fire began in a bedroom Monday night. West Jordan Fire Battalion Chief Clint Peterson tells the Deseret News a 14-year-old boy was doing homework when smoke alarms went off, while his 27-year-old wheelchair-bound brother was sleeping.
Peterson says the boy shut the door on the burning room, then called to neighbors to help.
Neighbor Chris Jaterka says he used a rock to break a window before helping his father and a passerby carry the disabled man through the window.
Peterson says the man was treated for smoke inhalation, but was otherwise unhurt.
Authorities say the fire caused about $100,000 in damage. Investigators are looking into the cause.
