Mother gives birth while standing; Grandma makes the catch

PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A new mother in Provo says her baby entered the world about one hour after her contractions started.

Ellen Goldsborough says she simply didn’t have enough warning. Her contractions started. Her water broke thirty-minutes later and then the baby came one hour after the first warning signs.

Baby Lily Goldsborough entered the world May 21 just after 9:00 p.m. under the most unusual circumstances.

“I felt the baby crown and I said mom she’s coming. I feel her head,” said the baby’s mother, Ellen Goldsborough as she was walking to the car.

“Mother-in-law and myself just looked at each other like, deep penetrative gaze like Oh dear it’s coming. You know so we drug her back into the house,” said the baby’s father, Geoffry Goldsborough.

Back inside the house, the baby’s mother barely had enough time to get in far enough to create some sort of privacy.

“I had to kick grandma or Liz’s feet out of the way just to close the door,” said Geoffry.

In less than a minute baby Lily was born.

Her Grandmother Elizabeth Carlson was there to catch and sooth her during her first moments of existence outside her mother’s womb.

“She’s as slippery as a fish. I mean it was scary and she’s right in my arm,” said Carlson.

“She was just there and I was looking at her and I thought. Oh, bring her to my chest. I need to hold her. So you know it was just really shocking,” said Ellen.

Midwives from Bella Natal in Orem drove to the apartment where the baby Lily was born. They weighed her and measured her. She comes in at 7 pounds 8 ounces and is 19 inches long.

Baby and mother are happy and healthy.
