SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4 - Utah) Driving along I-15 on Friday you couldn’t miss the massive BYU flag. You may not have known it is part of a bigger company rivalry.
While you can't see the Ute's retaliation from the freeway, it's definitely blowing up their office.
“There are 15,000 red balloons in here,” said Ty KiIsel, Director of Content Marketing for Lendio.
“I say 51 weeks of the year we work pretty hard,” said Brock Blake, CEO of Lendio. During those 51 weeks Lendio helps small businesses get the loans they need.
“This week you know we've got all kinds of pranks going on," said Blake.
Those pranks include that 80 by 60 foot BYU flag, which Lendio borrowed from the University.
“We just go to town,” said Lisa Trueax, a Senior VP.” And every year seems to get bigger and better.”
While this tradition is not as old as the rivalry itself, it has certainly left its mark.
“Started a few years ago when our employees painted my office red from head to toe,” said Blake, an avid BYU fan.
“You spend most nights collaborating, planning ideas to up the opponent,” said Burke Alder, VP of Marketing.
The week brings together the employees by making them choose sides.
“It's great for the company culture, we have a lot of fun with it,” said Blake. “No animosity, it's just ‘let’s have a good time.’”
“I think it brings a lot of unity across the state,” said Alder. “Of course everyone is divided, but I think it really brings companies and people together.”
