Kiet Thanh Ly was charged with 2 counts of 1st Degree Felony Attempted Murder and 4 counts of 3rd Degree Felony Assault charges.
The DA's office gave an account of the events that surrounded the stabbings and attempted stabbings that ended when a citizen with a gun stopped Ly.
According to court documents, Ly purchased a knife at the Smiths on 455 South 600 East on Thursday evening. Shortly after he completed the transaction, a clerk testified that Ly asked her to help him unwrap the knife.
After the knife was unwrapped, court documents show that Ly exited the store and that shortly thereafter, the clerks saw another man enter the store bleeding from the head.
Witnesses reported seeing Ly attack others in the parking lot near the store entrance while screaming, "Why did you kill all my people?"
The court document also said that a man who heard one of the victims screaming drew his gun and subdued Ly until police arrived. That man has asked to remain anonymous.
Ly later told police that he stabbed the people because voices in his head told him to "kill the people who killed our people."
