SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4 Utah) - A South Salt Lake man died after police said he was stabbed by his own next door neighbor.

"People are upset," Danette said.

She has never seen such violence at the apartment complex at 3400 south and about 400 east.

South Salt Lake Police said Ricky Magnuson inside his apartment there when someone knocked at the door.  When he answered the call, he was suddenly killed.

"A neighbor immediately reached in and stabbed the victim in the abdomen," said South Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Snyder.

Police said the alleged neighbor was 20-year-old Ansumana Jadama.  Jadama has a criminal background and a history of mental illness.  However, police told ABC4 Utah there was no clear motive for the attack.

"We do know that the victim and the suspect knew each other, but the extent of that interaction is still unknown at this point," Snyder said.

However, Danette said Jadama had a tough time with his neighbors.

"The guys were giving him problems," she said.

She said for that reason, Jadama came to her for help.

"He knocked on my door about a week ago and asked me to borrow my telephone," she said. In the process, Jadama told her he didn't trust his neighbors.  In fact, he thought he had been robbed.

"He asked me if I had seen anybody around his apartment," Danette said.

Then just two nights ago she said Jadama came over for help again.  For that reason, she was shocked by news of the stabbing.

"He didn't seem like he would do that," Danette said. "He didn't seem like he was in a state that he was gonna do that."

Jadama was enrolled in a treatment program at Utah Valley mental health.  Tonight he is in the Salt Lake Metro Jail facing charges of homicide and aggravated burglary.  Meanwhile, today, her neighbors mourned the victim's loss.

"I'm upset," Danette said.  "I feel for his family you know?"

Police said they do not have an official motive at this time.  An investigation into the case is still underway.
