The cable barrier in Logan Canyon was at milepost 474 along the Logan Canyon highway on Monday.
The narrow road has been the scene of several crashes over the past two years, most during the winter months when roads are slick.
One crash resulted in the heroic efforts of passersby who jumped into the freezing water on New Year's Eve to rescue a man and three children trapped inside.
The well-publicized crash led to demand for a safer barrier at the spot located about halfway between Logan and Bear Lake.
UDOT officials said that no barrier is guaranteed to stop motorists that continue to drive too fast through the section of Logan Canyon, and that safe driving habits are always preferred, especially in slick conditions.
