SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) - 20 Utah companies are coming together to make home buying or refinancing more affordable for the heroes among us.

The heroes they are targeting: firefighters, police officers, first responders and members of the military including veterans.

Staci Roylance Utah's Best Real Estate Group said, "We are here to say 'thank you' and are happy to help."

The program began after 9-11 in Minnesota and has been spreading across the country.

Chris VanLeeuwen with W.J. Bradley Mortgage Capital commented, "It's our way to say 'thank you' for all you've done, everything you've given -- especially to our communities -- and to our country as well."

The real estate and lender affiliates will offer Utah heroes discounts on mortgage fees and commissions. It gives heroes the chance to get into a house they might not otherwise be able to afford.

Utah Air National Guardsman Kevin Idle said, "It will definitely help bridge the gap for that down payment."

Since the Homes for Heroes Foundation began, it has saved qualifying families more than 2-point-3 million dollars.
