WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Hispanic women came together in West Valley City Saturday to celebrate and connect with each other.

"It kind of brings people together,” said Amanda Barrios, University of Utah.

2,000 women from across the valley were expected to attend this year's free Expo Mujer Utah to learn about an array of services in their own backyard, everything from health, beauty and nutrition.

"It helps to make women feel more comfortable to come here and spend time together and also learn the resources that are here for them in their own languages,” said Ana Maria Fereday, Hispanic Media Services

One booth from the University of Utah aimed to encourage Latino women to be active in research studies and also not be afraid to get medical help if they need it.

"People just need to know that they are protected, it’s not like in their home countries where there are no laws, there are no rights,” said Barrios. "They have the right to a translator and interpreter in medical care. That's one of the things that they are intimidated by, only English speaking doctors and they are afraid of asking questions.”

Many women attended with family members. Mothers and grandmothers are the main axis of the family in the Latino culture, according to Hispanic Media Services, which organized the Expo.

Organizers said next year the event will be expanded to include women from all over the world.
