Governor Herbert presented Evans with the official declaration prior to tonight’s Jazz home game against the Houston Rockets. An excerpt from the declaration states, “As residents of the State of Utah, we are tremendously proud of Jeremy for becoming the first Utah Jazz player to win the NBA slam dunk contest and literally personify our state slogan, ‘Life Elevated.’”
Chosen solely by fan vote, Evans leapt his way to the title on three dunks. With a camera attached to his headband, Evans provided fans a personal look into his first dunk. The second dunk featured an assist from teammate Gordon Hayward as Evans skied to catch two basketballs for two consecutive dunks while in mid-air. His final dunk welcomed actor/comedian Kevin Hart to the court in the form of a postman delivering Evans a Karl Malone jersey. Evans put on the jersey and soared over Hart while putting his left hand behind his head, similar to a style often used by “The Mailman.”
Evans received 29 percent of the more than five million votes cast by fans worldwide via NBA Mobile, NBA.com, text message and Twitter, and was announced as the winner during the live television broadcast by TNT.
