SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – School's out, but teachers, parents and even some students are learning lessons at the annual Utah Education Association Convention.

One of the big themes this year is making our schools bully free.

High school teacher, Curtis Benjamin is on the front lines.

"I think bullying is a largely hidden issue at times. I don't know if teachers, parents see enough of it as they should," said Benjamin.

Future teacher, Nicole Uhl knows first hand just how painful it can be.

"I’ve personally experienced bullying growing up and I know the impacts it's had on me. So, I’m just really looking forward to those workshops {Friday} afternoon to know how I can prevent it," said Uhl.

That workshop includes a panel discussion with members from the Inclusion Center. Creating an open dialogue between parents, teachers and students, who all play a role.

"All of us together. It just can't be teachers, it's got to be student to student, parents to child, teacher to student. All of us coming together to eradicate the problem of bullying," said UEA President, Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh

The problem can have devastating consequences in the classroom for victims.

"They can't learn. If you don't feel safe in an environment you are not going to gain the most out of where ever you are at," said Gallagher-Fishbaugh.

That’s why UEA is sending a clear message.

"Bullying is simply unacceptable and we recognize that as educators," said Gallagher-Fishbaugh.

It’s a message teachers are taking to heart.

"I think the important thing is to be an identifiable advocate. That they can come to a teacher, that there is an adult they can trust," said Benjamin.

Resistance to go to school, change in behavior and bruising can all be signs of bullying.

Parents who think their child is being bullied should notify the school and teacher immediately.
