The virus was brought into the shelter by a cast that was either impounded by animal control or given up by an owner.
The virus, Virulent Systemic Feline Calicivirus, only effects cats and usually leads to an agonizing death.
The shelter will be disinfected over the next 10 days. During this time no new cats will be admitted.
Steps have been taken to protect cats being brought in for vaccinations and surgeries.
Signs and symptoms of VS-FCV are fever, ulceration of the oral cavity, itchy running nose, sneezing, inflammation of the mouth, acute arthritis (limping kitten syndrome), and pneumonia.
If your cat is showing any of these signs or symptoms, please consult with your veterinarian immediately.
If you have adopted a cat from the Cache Humane Society recently and you suspect your cat is infected, you can return the cat to the humane society.
