CEDAR HILLS, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – A target shooter is responsible for sparking up a wildfire on a mountain in Cedar Hills on Friday.

The wildfire broke out just before 4 p.m. forcing the Lone Peak Fire Department to call in additional resources from across Utah County.

The fire spread across 10 acres, but was quickly contained with the help of a helicopter dropping water on flames.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Department said an 18-year-old boy target shooting on the mountain sparked the fire and called 911. The teen tried to douse the flames with water, but the winds quickly spread the fire.

At one point, the fire was within a quarter mile of about 70 homes on each side of the mountain, but flames were never close enough to force evacuations.

State and county officials said the fire is a reminder to be extra cautious, not only when target shooting, but when building campfires and celebrating holidays. Fireworks go on sale Sunday, June 23.
