SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - It's another sign of the tough economy. Requests for assistance from the Utah Food Bank are up 30% over last year.

Food Bank spokesperson Jessica Pugh, says it’s the most worst situation they’ve seen in many years.

Food Bank donations from corporations and the Federal Government have been cut back due to the economy and people are in more need of help, so it falls to the citizenry to step up. Right now, the Food Bank shelves are stocking as much as last year, but much more is going out. So the Food Bank is asking for donations of high protein foods, canned vegetables and fruit, and the kinds of food needed to make healthy, nutritious meals.

And volunteers are needed. Jessica Pugh says volunteers are what turn $1.00 in donations into $9.00 worth of food and services.

Time, food and money...that is what the Utah Food Bank needs most in this time of most need.

UPDATE:

ALL Gap stores in Utah (Gateway, Fashion Place, University Mall, and Provo Towne Center) are all drop off locations for the Utah Food Bank.
