SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A new CDC report says Utah has the nation's highest autism rate.
Now a Taylorsville family is sharing their story with the world, teaching everyone about autism through a new film.

"The United States of Autism" features 21 families from across the country, with autism. Included in that 21, the Cox family from Taylorsville and their six-year-old Parker.

Parker and his family spent the morning with us here at ABC4 Utah, when I asked him about the film he answered like any six-year-old.

Parker said, "It's really fun to do it."

But Parker is not like most six-year-olds, Parker is autistic. He was diagnosed when he was 18 months old.

Parker's Mom Evelyn said, "Wen he was first diagnosed, I had no clue. I knew he was behind but i didn't think he had autism."

The diagnosis was nearly six years ago, three years ago the family got the chance to film with the crew putting together the film.

The United States of Autism shows one man's 11,000 mile journey across the country searching for answers about what is autism.

The Cox family felt the opportunity to be in the film was good on so many levels.

Evelyn said, "It was such an eye opening experience to me, it will educate and bring acceptance and the film will be a great thing for everyone."

They learned about each other, but mostly were able to share their message about autism.

Something they hope this film will help to teach everyone: their son is different - but still, their son.

Evelyn said, "We are still people, and they still have so much to offer."
